There’s a specific feeling Koreans get when a song they already know suddenly starts climbing the charts out of nowhere. Not a new song. Not a comeback. An old release — something that came and went without making much noise — suddenly everywhere again, shooting up the rankings, trending on every platform.
That feeling has a word: 역주행.
The Word: 역주행
역주행 (yeokjuhaeng) is made up of two parts:
- 역 (逆) — reverse, against, backwards
- 주행 (走行) — driving, moving forward
Literally: driving the wrong way. Going against traffic.
In actual Korean traffic law, 역주행 is a serious violation — you’re moving in the opposite direction of everyone else on the road. It’s dangerous. It’s unexpected. And somehow that’s exactly the energy that makes it the perfect word for what happens when a forgotten song suddenly surges up the charts in the opposite direction of time.
The metaphor works because both kinds of 역주행 defy the expected flow. Everyone expects new songs to chart. Nobody expects a track from two years ago to suddenly beat current releases to number one. That’s the reverse movement — going against how things are supposed to work, and somehow winning.
How 역주행 Happens
역주행 doesn’t happen by accident, and it almost never happens the same way twice. But there are patterns.
밈 (meme) is the most powerful trigger. A clip goes viral — not necessarily about the music itself, but about something adjacent. An artist’s personality moment, a funny video, a fan edit that catches something nobody noticed before. Suddenly people who had no context for a group are watching, and a percentage of them click through to the actual music.
유튜브 알고리즘 does the rest. Once a song gets a sudden spike in streams, the algorithm treats it like new content. It starts recommending it. More people find it. The streams go up more. It feeds itself.
챌린지 (challenge) — a dance challenge or lip sync on TikTok or Instagram Reels that uses the song — can ignite the same process even faster, because it puts the actual audio in front of millions of people in seconds.
The result is a chart position that looks impossible on paper: a two-year-old song beating songs that released this week.
The 역주행 Lineup: EXID → 브레이브걸스 → 리센느
역주행 isn’t a new phenomenon in K-pop, but the cases that happened have a kind of lineage — each one making the next one feel slightly more possible.
EXID — “위아래” (Up & Down, 2014)
The foundational case. EXID released “위아래” in August 2014 and it did okay but didn’t break through. Then in October, a fancam of member Hani went viral — shot at a small festival, not even a proper stage. The clip spread everywhere. People who saw the fancam went to find the song. Streams exploded. The song that had peaked and declined suddenly shot back up the charts months after release.
EXID essentially became a major group because of one fancam. “위아래” is now considered a classic. That’s 역주행.
브레이브걸스 — “롤린” (Rollin’, 2017)
The most dramatic case in K-pop history. “롤린” was released in March 2017 and barely registered. The group nearly disbanded. Then in February 2021 — almost four years later — a fan compiled footage of 브레이브걸스 performing at military base events (군부대 공연), where soldiers consistently lost their minds for “롤린” even when nobody in the general public was paying attention.
The compilation went viral. The song went from obscurity to number one. Four years. The group went from nearly over to one of the biggest comebacks in Korean pop history.
브레이브걸스’ 역주행 became the reference point. When Koreans talk about 역주행 now, “롤린” is the comparison.
리센느 — “LOVE ATTACK” (2024→2026)
The most recent entry in the 역주행 lineage, and the one that’s happening right now.
리센느 (RESCENE) released “LOVE ATTACK” in August 2024. It came and went. Then in early 2026, member 원이 opened a personal YouTube channel. In one of her videos, she casually referenced 거제 야호 — a meme that was already circulating in Korean internet culture. (If you’ve read our post on 거제 야호, you already know this part.)
The meme connection pulled new eyes toward 원이’s channel, then toward 리센느 as a group, then toward their music. Streams for “LOVE ATTACK” started climbing in May 2026. By July 2026, the song hit number one on Melon — the biggest music chart in Korea — almost two years after its original release.
멜론이 2026년 상반기를 정리하면서 역주행의 주인공으로 리센느를 꼽았다. The chart platform that tracks Korean music listed 리센느 as the 역주행 story of the year.
Why 역주행 Feels Different From Regular Success
When a new song hits number one, it’s exciting. But 역주행 hits differently.
There’s a specific emotional texture to it that Koreans have a word for: 중꺾마 — 중요한 건 꺾이지 않는 마음 (what matters is the spirit that doesn’t break). The artists kept going. The song existed, waiting. The audience found it eventually.
역주행 feels like justice. Like the system got corrected. Like something that deserved attention finally got it, even if the timing was completely wrong the first time around.
For fans, there’s also a particular pride in being part of it — being in the moment when a song is climbing. Streaming actively, watching the chart update, knowing you’re part of the surge. It’s participatory in a way that supporting a new release isn’t, because 역주행 feels like rescue.
And for the artists, there’s something 역주행 proves that no debut success can: staying power. Anyone can have a good launch. Not everyone has a song that finds its audience two years later.
